All about sewing machine needles

Sewing machine needles for your sewing machine are the most replacement part of your sewing machine, they affect how your sewing machine forms stitches. Understanding how the needle parts of a sewing machine work will help you choose the right needle for the fabric and thread you are using.

All sewing machine needles have the same basic parts; the variation in needles is determined by their shape and length.

The shank of a sewing machine needle

The top thick part of a sewing machine needle is called the shank. This part of the needle is inserted into the machine. Needles for household sewing machines are made up of a flat side and a round side to help insert the needle correctly. The flat part should be toward the back and the round side at the front. Needles on industrial machines have a fully rounded shaft and the groove is used to know in which direction to place a new needle in the machine.

The groove in the needle

A groove is located along the side of the needle leading to the eye and acts as a place for the thread to be placed in the needle. The groove of the needle come in different sizes. This has to do with the thickness of the needle but there are also special needles with an extra large groove to better guide the super strong thread through it.

Through the eye of the needle

The eye of the needle carries the thread so that the machine can continue to form stitches. The size of the eye can vary and works in conjunction with the groove of the needle. If you use a needle with an eye that is too small or too large, your thread may break and snap.

The point of the needle

The point of the needle is the first contact with the fabric and is responsible for how the needle passes through the fabric. The most common types of needle tips are sharp. Sharp needles are for all woven fabrics.

What kind of sewing machine needles are there?

Below we will list the most common types of sewing machine needles.

Universal needle, System 130/705 H

As the name suggests, universal needles are the most commonly used needle. The universal needle is often used as the standard needle for all types of sewing projects because it allows easy processing of many materials. They can be used on woven fabrics, synthetic fabrics and some knitted fabrics. The finer needles are usually used for lightweight fabrics. The thicker needles are used on medium to heavy fabrics.

Stretch needle, System 130/705 H-S

A stretch needle has a Special indentation, allowing extra space for the gripper tip to get close to the needle and this prevents skipping stitches. This needle is therefore ideal for use with fabrics such as Lycra, silk, jersey and highly elastic synthetic fabrics or even elastic itself.Polyester or cotton wrapped polyester threads should be used.

Super stretch needles, System HAx1 SP

When even a normal stretch needle still skips on difficult fabrics use HAx1 SP needles.
This needle is also excellent for use when your Sewing Machine or Lock Machine keeps skipping stitches.

Jersey & Ballpoint Needles, System 130/705 H SUK

This needle is specially made for sewing knitted fabrics, such as tricot and jersey. The point of the needle is rounded so that it does not damage the fibers of knitted fabrics.

Microtex needles, System 130/705 H-M

The Microtex needle has a particularly sharp slender point that allows you to sew very fine and tightly woven materials well. For very straight edge stitching, including silk, microfiber fabric, coated materials, foil and faux leather.

Jeans or denim needles, System 130/705 H-J

These jeans needlesare natural for jeans and for densely woven fabrics such as heavy twill, canvas and heavy linen often used for workwear. Jeans needles have a very sharp point and a stronger shank to prevent the needle from bending or breaking and penetrating heavy fabric.

Leather Needle, System 130/705 H LL

Leather needles areknown for their cutting point. The advantage of this point is that it easily penetrates leather, faux leather, suede and similar materials.

Quilt needles, System 130/705 H-Q

Quilt needles have a particularly slim, slightly rounded tip on the needle that can easily penetrate thick layers without damaging the material. Quilting needles are designed to be used with multiple layers of fabric with felt in quilting and patchwork.

Topstitch needles, System 130N

For sewing with super strong thread then it is best to use a Topstitch sewing machine needle. These Topstitch needles have a slightly longer eye (2 mm in all needle thicknesses) compared to the universal or embroidery needles.

Metallic needles, System 130 MET

The metallic needle has a particularly long eye (2mm) in all needle thicknesses compared to the universal or embroidery needles. For processing special and effect threads especially for metallic threads.

Embroidery needles, System 130/705 H-E

Embroidery needles are designed with a wider eye so that threads such as rayon and polyester embroidery thread can pass freely and easily during embroidery. Skipped stitches can often be prevented when embroidering because the fabric bends up and down quickly due to the fast-moving embroidery stitch. Embroidery needles have a pontoon scarf with an oversized hump, reducing the likelihood of this by reducing the amount of movement in the fabric.

Gold Titanium Needles, System 130/705 H-ET

The titanium needle can be identified by the gold color of the needle. This needle is perfect for many embroidery projects. The titanium coating improves needle durability in applications with a higher number of stitches and reduces needle wear. For embroidery and solid, tightly woven materials.

Anti Sticking Needles, System 130/705 H-SU

These Super Universal needles have a special anti-stick coating that ensures less glue residue adheres to the needle. In addition, the needles have a larger eye making them excellent for embroidery as well. The slightly rounded tip guarantees trouble-free use with most fabrics and materials.

EL needles, System ELx705

The EL needle is a universal needle but slightly longer than a regular universal needle. These needles are common in coverlock machines. Because the needle has a different shape, the coverlock machine catches the thread better, so you are less likely to skip stitches.

Universal Twin Needle, System 130/705H ZWI

These needles are used for a double stitch side by side this can be for a straight stitch to decorative stitches. These needles have a particularly sharp, slender tip for very fine and tightly woven materials easily penetrate.
